Brian and I met while attending Kansas State University and were married in Stromsburg, NE. Actually, the wedding reception was celebrated in the farm shed! Only God knew that 12 years later He would lead us back to farm the land!
Brian taught science and worked as a Certified Athletic Trainer, and I taught elementary students before choosing to stay home to raise our children. We spent almost a year in Laramie, WY where our Katie was born! God made it pretty clear that we needed to be closer to family, so we were thankful when Brian got a teaching job closer to the farm. Our Matthew was born in Aurora and we were living there when God started stirring in our hearts about farming. I was very reluctant, but God knew what he was doing! God’s ways are higher than our ways! Isaiah 55:8-9
I had been doing a Bible study on the book of Esther when God opened my eyes. Author, Beth Moore said, “Sometimes you think you are right where God wants you and then He picks you up and turns you in a completely different direction. A lot of times He uses a crisis to do this.” Immediately, I was convicted of my stubbornness and started praying that if God wanted us to farm He would change my heart. That night I shared with Brian and we began talking and praying more seriously about the possibility. Then within the next few weeks, we found out that our church was going to host a “Farming for God” conference encouraging farmers about how they are doing the Lord’s work in their fields!
At that point, we couldn’t deny God’s leading, and we went to visit Brian’s parents. We will never forget that moment, sitting around the dinner table at the farm! We announced that baby #3 was on the way and prayed for God’s guidance on this farm. After our Emma was born, we made the move back to Stromsburg to farm. Of course, God knew what He was doing! God is truly able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine! Ephesians 3:20-21
Because of God’s sovereign plan, Brian has been able to work along-side his dad and learn from his wealth of knowledge and experience. We are grateful for the opportunity to farm this third generation land and carry on the family tradition.
Even before we knew we’d be farming, God starting planting seeds and putting people in our lives. Years earlier, we met some organic farmers who encouraged us to convert our farm to certified organic. With time, hard work, consistent record-keeping, and careful farming practices we were able to certify our first organic field in 2016. It has been a journey filled with risks and a lot of prayer, but God is faithful and has continued to grow our faith, our cattle, and our crops. To Him be the glory!
